reports on this vary. some sources say it will be sometime in the spring, others say it's likely to not be until early fall. there is to my knowledge no official release date but i believe it's in selective beta currently.

It's an update that contains many critical updates within it. Someone else could probably better explain it to you though. :)

I don't honestly expect a service pack for Windows 7 until fall at the earliest and possible during Winter. It's often 14 months or so after the first release....which would mean sometime in 2011.

Agree, not to mention there isn't a whole lot of chatter, like Vista, for a service pack. I'm not saying one isn't coming, it's just not coming in a Vista type time frame :)

People were darn near screaming for a service pack on release date with Vista

And yes, I have, used, and like Vista

A service pack is a collection of bug fixes and security updates. Sometimes they also include new features. Microsoft usually releases these on a yearly basis, XP being the exception to that for various reasons.

all service packs are free to download, if you buy it after they just include it on disk

Any legitimate user is eligible for the service pack. And yes, it is free.
