ATI X1400 Driver No Longer in Windows Update

I had installed the original Windows 7 beta build 7000 on a Shuttle X100 XPC and when I ran Windows Update, it pulled down a nice pre-release version of a Windows 7 driver that worked very well. This XPC is about the size of a hard-back textbook and uses an ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 GPU chip. This is much like many mid-level notebooks from a few years ago. It's not great, but has enough power to play most any multimedia and supports full Aero.

Today I decided to install one of the newer betas of Windows 7, so I performed a fresh install and foolishly expected the nice video driver to show up in Windows Update. IT"S GONE! After some web searching, I discovered I'm not the only fool who trusted Microsoft concerning this ATI driver. I was able to install a Vista driver from Levono in compatibility mode. It does work, but I'd prefer the real thing.

    Bye.

That's often the problem when counting on seeing everything through the MS updates. A quick trip directly to ATI.AMD might spare you some problems there since that's the manufacturer.

Tadaaa.... Look under Vista 32/64>ATI mobility at Graphics Drivers & Software The X1400 is in plain sight!

For 7 drivers the wait will be there since it's an unfinished version of Windows also seeing an unfinished support base. The one saving grace however is being able to still use Vista drivers while Vista couldn't use XP drivers!

Been there, done that - you didn't click through that link to see the notice that there is no driver available. So for now, I'll have the use the inferior Vista driver. The Vista driver has a good WEI score, like 3.5 for graphics, but does a poor job playing 1080i HDTV recordings. The no longer available Windows 7 driver played 1080i HDTV smoothly with no glitches or artifacts.

    Bye.

Well that's what you are going to be finding from now on unless by chance you find it listed elsewhere like guru3D or another 3rd party site that carries drivers for older hardwares. download from Guru3D.com

Since 7 drivers seen now are still beta you won't find any for 7 for anything there at this time. Checking the manufacturer's support site would be the other place to look for what you are looking for in case they started carrying any for 7 this early.

7 won't be seeing too much support for the older hardwares like Vista saw. That's one reason the WEI was raised higher there. Too bad the Vista WEI is great for 7 where the one for 7 would be correct for Vista in reverse! Unfortunately the driver support for the next version won't go back as far since newer hardwares have come out since Vista's release.

Hmm, I'm having the same issue now. Found anything that worked better than the driver from Levono? I not was there anything special you had to to get it to install properly?

id go with the lower 9.3 or 9.2....
9.3 should let you install that GPU drivers...
9.4 did away with some of the older cards....

After so many verions ATI always seems to lose the next oldest series of cards. One example was seeing ATI(prior to the AND buyout) drop all support for the 9xxx models entirely once the 2xxx was first out. Once AMD picked up the ball there the older card were then seeing support for a period of time.

After 2 or 3 newer lines come out the differences are simply too large in vpu chip design as well as other things where you can't cover every model that ever came out with one single update. It simply doesn't work that way.

    Crunchy Doodle...;

I'm sitting on the fence right now, with this issue.
When I installed my W7 build 7600, my X1400 was "upgraded" to 8.561.00 dated 12/1/2008.

These divers STILL available via the Microsoft Update Catalog , where you type x1400 on the search bar and will get This driver provided by ATI Technologies Inc. for support of ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
Architecture: X86 version 8.561.00 as well with de AMD 64....:)

Well you still need to choose the correct catalyst not by the version number alone but by type. If you run into a 9.2 Radeon catalyst that won't you any since you need the mobility version. Those are for two different types of display adapters.
