Windows update fails everytime.

It's been doing this for a few days. It had 11 priority updates so I download them and restart my computer. It fails and I try again. It keeps failing and it still has the stupid shut down thing in the start menu instead of log off as I like it. It's really making me mad because obviously I can't update so what the heck does it want me to do? Everytime I restart my computer it try's again.

I'm so mad I'm having trouble not screaming.

Product Fred, tried CCleaner and it didn't work. I did get a new page where at the "Starting windows" screen it then went into installing update ___ of 8383. But it got stuck in a loop afterwards of it restarting, failing, restarting, until eventually it just took me to the login.

Belikexp I'll try your suggestion.

Edit: it seems to have worked. but with one catch, it asked me to verify that my software is genuine and I did and it worked fine. A few days ago when I tried to install xp mode it said my software is not genuine. Any ideas?

Edit (again): Damn as soon as I open windows update it comes back.

Just an FYI -

when the "the stupid shut down thing in the start menu instead of log off" presents itself, you can shut down via CTRL+ALT+DEL and use the shutdown icon there without the updates running.

You would save your self a lot of time by backing up your data and reinstalling Win 7. An alternative is buy another drive, reinstall Win 7 and copy your data from the old drive to the new.

So why can't you do a system restore to a time before you installed the updates?

Then force Windows Update to only respond to manual commands (not on auto-install)

Create new restore point, Then only let one new update at a time install (+ reboot) till you find the culprit
(or more likely you will find everything installs correctly coz one install might have got corrupted previously)
