Disable "restart now or later" popup?

I had an update come through for IE some time yesterday. Ever since, Windows is nagging me to restart the system so the update can be applied.

I'm getting the popup so I can select "remind me in four hours" or whatever, but I'm sick of doing that every four hours - I don't even use IE!

This is a production machine and has a lot of uptime, and I'd just rather reboot it when I feel it's appropriate.

How can I disable these notifications?

That's a good one, too, and I'll keep that handy.

I actually just figured it out on my own. If anybody wants to change the popup notification behavior, here's the steps:

1. Hit Start, type gpedit.msc into the search field, hit enter.
2. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
3. The key in question is "Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations". Double-click it to bring up the key properties.
4. Click the "Enabled" radio, and change the wait period from ten minutes to a value of your choosing. (I set the max - 1,440 minutes.)

Done.

would setting it to disabled disable the notification all together? already rebooted just now so unless i reinstall a update not really a way to check.

from what ive read either u can edit the value of the popup box like you stated or stop the service until reboot.

no registry option to simply disable it?

... but if the notification were disabled, you would not know that the systems needs rebooting to apply the update.

What would be the equivalent Registry Edits in Home Premium?

The first time I looked at it, none of the keys in that group policy were set at all. I think it just reverts to a default behavior absent any kind of setting telling it to do otherwise. I don't know how to change that - probably it can't be done.

One thing that's always ticked me off about Windows is having to reboot to apply updates. Especially for something like Internet Explorer - I don't even use IE, and it certainly wasn't in use when I downloaded and installed the update. Why should I have to reboot to apply the update to IE?

Anyway, if you don't have gpedit.msc in Home Premium, I don't know what the equivalent tweak would be. You'll have to dig around for it on your own.

the pc would eventually be rebooted so i suppose a daily timer would suffice but it could be 2-3 days without reboot and i really could care less since theres no critical data stored on the pc so even if a zero day hit id just roll back or reformat without any hassles. but yea a better way to look at it is to ask what could the home versions of windows do since no gpedit.msc exists. As far as I know you can create a simple batch script to enable/disable wu service and thats about it unless someone else knows of a better solution.
