Windows Update errors

Hi

Windows Update downloaded but failed to install updates, stating errors-

KB978601; KB979683; KB980232 (error code 80070643)
KB979309; KB981332 (error code 80071A91)

System Restore in Safe Mode also failed (error code 80071A91).

Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

For the second:
This is untested, but apparently a possible solution to your second problem (Error Code 80071A91). I suggest you read the following thread before using it.

Quote:
First:
1. Bring up an elevated command prompt
2. Execute the following commands sequentially:

a. fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\

b. cd /d %windir%\system32\config\txr

c. attrib -r -s -h *

d. del *

Second:
1. Bring up an elevated command prompt
2. Execute the following commands sequentially:

a. cd %windir%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine

b. attrib –a –h –s *.TM*

c. del *.TM*

NOW REBOOT! After reboot updates should install.
Tip   Tip
An elevated command prompt/cmd.exe involves starting a command prompt as an administrator. This can be done by going through Start > Search for "cmd" > Right Click cmd.exe and Run as Administrator.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Hello notsograymatter

Thanks for the advice and sincere apologies for the delay in response; I had to go away on a family errand. Okay, I have had a bit of time to think and look back and it seems these errors are software-conflict related because they are obviously not common errors. The errors occurred soon after I installed Java 6 Update 20 on Windows 7. I probably avoided the same errors on XP Pro because Java was not updated.

Maybe a short cut would be to do a re-install, but 64 rather than 32 bit as I read somewhere of a user repeatedly getting these same errors despite several re-installs. The 64 bit would also alleviate the occasional malfunctioning of programs that I regularly use such as Open Office, Revo Uninstaller, and Truecrypt.

I will post back the results of which option I take.

Thanks again.
