    updates changed itself???!!!

I thought I had read about this before but can't find it again. I woke up this morning and my computer had rebooted saying windows had installed new updates. I thought this was kind of odd since I set every computer I own to download but let me choose. I reviewed what it had installed and it somehow changed to download all microsoft and optional updates and install automaticaly! Any one had this occur or heard of it. It is kind of freaking me out a bit. I know no one in the house changed it because it is only the wife and I, and she wouldn't even think to change something like that, especially on my desk top. Any thoughts?

Yes I have had this happen many many times. Microsoft will change the setting without your permission. When they have something that is so critical that has to be fixed they will change the setting and force the machine to take the updates. I have had this happen even when the updates are completely turned off. If there is a huge public out cry or something that is in the media a lot I think MS just figures it is better to fix the problem and force everyone to take it so it will go away faster.

If you recently installed the microsoft security essentials it will change your updates setting automatically and not even tell you... I noticed it did the same to me when I installed it and had to go back in and change it back.

not sure if that was your issue or not just a thought as it will do that..

I think that update messed with my computer. I was working late last night and my computer restarted itself to make these updates. (still annoyed that I had to redo half of a presentation at and finish at 3 in the morning) When it started back up, everything looked like the windows 98 theme, but only the start & shutdown options button worked. I restarted it again and it seemed to work fine. I defragmented and clicked restart again, but this time some random message came up with a few numbers. I didn't get those numbers since it closed down everything.

The computer also had Office 2010 Beta installed which refused to work after opening and closing it once. I just got rid of that all together. Now today, I'm noticing that my my laptop is hotter than normal, and every time the computer starts up and every time I open up Windows Explorer, any CD that is in the drive spins very quickly, which did not happen before.

Anyone have any insight on this?

I guess this is the price we all pay to be on an OS that we really don't own, we just lease it. I like windows 7 alot and will stick with it, however I do not agree with the fact they can alter my system settings without telling me, makes me wonder what else they can change around to suit thier needs. It didn't just update one or two things, It updated a long list including my graghics driver and several others I had chosen not to install. This is not good buisness at all.
