    Update Error

Lately, I've been getting the code error: 80072EFE, and I don't know why. I don't have any firewalls installed, and my webbrowser won't let me go to Micorsoft's updating site for whatever reason. Anyone have any ideas what this is?

What web browser? You may only use Internet Explorer to access Windows Update. You do have a firewall installed unless you have turned it off. You cannot uninstall it.

Open Start, type "windowsupdate.log" and press enter. Use the find command to look for instances of error: or warning: insensitive to case. Post those lines here if the problem does not become obvious.

It's not letting me copy and paste any of it into the page, nor is it letting me add any attachments.

Right click while you are typing as I am to write this message and select paste from the context menu after copying something interesting from the log./

Well I meant that it says the server resets when I try to attach the file (which is about a 150KB in size), or when I try to copy and paste any of the contents of the file.

Can you copy and paste it in notepad? If you can, save it as .txt to your desktop, then from there copy and past the contents in your next post.

    Hi, Richardc269.

You are not the first I've heard of lately getting error code 80072EFE (Internet Connection Aborted). Generally the error occurs when the Windows update server is inundated. The recommendation is to try again in 15-20 minutes, although others have found that the 15-20 minute rule really does not apply. It can be up to two days before you receive the updates, or can get the updates downloaded.

Noting that the MSE update server was apparently out of commission for two+ days, there may be a connection. Additionally, although the rush should have passed, there were 10 security bulletins released last week.

The above-linked topic goes to KB Article 836941, which includes suggestions when this error is encountered.

I looked at MS's website. 1: I don't have a firewall installed (nor are any turned on, as I see firewalls close to being completely useless, in my opinion), 2: I didn't install any anti-virus until 2 days ago, and even before I installed it, I was having the same EFE error, and finally 3: I tried attaching the .txt file, and it tells me the webpage resets while trying to attach even a simple 154KB .txt file. At least on this website anyway. haven't tried it anywhere else.

Also, I just tried finding updates with my Firewall turned on, still nothing. I'll try it again in a little while. This crap's been happening for at least a whole WEEK now.

Edit: I just tried accessing Microsoft's Update website with Internet Explorer. It won't effing connect to it, even with my firewall turned on. Wtf is with this horse puckey? I'm starting to think some blasted virus is infecting my system, but AVG isn't doing jack squat about it. I'm about to do a damn format on this thing, this is ludicrous.

Can you connect to just plain Microsoft.com?.. just wondering i had i guess this virus on an old PC of mine where it somehow re-directed my IE to a script.. was either in my proxy tab or lan tab something like that.. and made it where i couldn't connect to anything that deals with microsoft.

I did what you mentioned, and both FireFox and IE go to Microsoft.com without a problem.
