32-bit Windows can only handle 32-bit software.
64-bit Windows can handle 32-bit and 64-bit software.

If you wish to have 64-bit Windows then you must install it first. 32-bit Windows cannot upgrade to 64-bit.

You cannot "upgrade" from 32-bit to 64-bit. You have to completely reinstall the OS by booting from the 64-bit disc.

If you have any personal data/programs installed, they will need to be backed up and reinstalled, as you will end up with a clean slate.

That's one way of wording it. You need to reinstall Windows by booting from the 64-bit disc.
