Ok, fair hit, I guess. My point about multiple copies of a serial number being sold is that once a number is used to validate one PC, it should come up as invalid when someone tries to use it on another PC. As there is an online or phone check involved, I thought that was what the check was about.
As for Technet or MSDN, I will look into that further.

The reason it does NOT come up as invalid when you install is because everyone thinks Microsoft is watching their every move and they always know what someone is doing on their computer (you know conspiracy people that think Microsoft is watching your every move). Microsoft does not do this they don't care. So when you are installing an OS they (Microsoft) are NOT checking on you they assume that you are obeying the rules and NOT installing illegal software. It is only when YOU contact them (Activation) to check if the OS is valid that they (Microsoft) can and do check your Product Key. At that point if it has been installed elsewhere then both installs have a problem. You have one because your Product Key is someone else’s, and they (the other install with the same product key) have a problem because they did not secure the Product Key and let someone else use it.
