I've been able to activate the COA online on six Dell laptops, one HP and one Gateway *shudders*, all using the COA key from the sticker on the laptop's casing.

FYI Whenever you have a thread and the issue has been resolved just click on the red triangle and write solved. This way it will appear with a green check mark and others will know it has been taken care of. Thanks. Fabe

I know that this thread is a little old.

I've gotten this message on 7, vista & server 2008 r2. I've also traced it to a registry cleaner deleting something crutial. Now I've quit using such things.

Just curious, but how would a registry cleaner change/affect something that's based off of a hardware hash? Some registry cleaners may be bad, but some don't go deep enough to cause any real issues, such as CCleaner. That app has fixed many issues for me over time.
