    System Restore error 0x80070005

    Hi,

Like another user on the forum, I have a problem with System Restore that doesn't seem solvable, but I thought I'd ask around and see if it can be fixed somehow...

I've noticed that I am unable to use System Restore - each time I try to restore an older point, I get the message:
"System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.
    Details;
System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"

The only anti-virus program I am using is Windows Security Essentials. Previously I also had Comodo Firewall (Free version) installed, but System Restore failed to work even when I disabled or uninstalled the Firewall.

Previously I was using a program called Soluto to help my laptop boot up more quickly, and when I uninstalled it, I tested System Restore and it worked. I assumed that Soluto was the reason why I could not use System Restore earlier, but apparently it is not the case, as it turns out that I am still unable to use System Restore.

For some reason, this problem happens on both my Windows 7, 64-bit machines. One is a self-assembled small form factor desktop, another is an Asus UL80VT laptop. I can only assume that perhaps one of the programs that I have installed on both machines has broken System Restore, but despite many attempts, I am still unable to figure out exactly which program seems to be the problem.

I do have backups of my systems, but I would like System Restore to work as it takes a much shorter time than restoring an entire system image. I hope someone will be able to help me with this. Any help offered would be very greatly appreciated :)

Try running System Restore in safe mode. Back in XP days, when all me restore points wouldn't work. I could almost certainly count on them working from safe mode. In safe mode your AV/firewall interference issues would be taken out of the mix as well. A Guy

Thanks everyone for the replies :)

merkat106: I'm not sure the articles apply,as I have absolutely no problems with Windows Updates. I read them and tried the regsvr processes mentioned in the second article, but it doesn't seem to fix anything.

A Guy: I already tried running System Restore from safe mode, as well as through Startup Repair, but System Restore still gave me the same errors.

ryo: I did the System File Checker, and according to the scan results, I did have some errors that could not be repaired, but looking at the entries, they seem to be driver issues (I had some problems with my Nvidia drivers before, but they're working again now). Should I upload the file somewhere so someone can help me take a look?

The Master: I'd prefer not to do a clean install due to the amount of time I'd have to spend backing up my files and reinstalling my programs, etc. Plus I've kind of run out of hard disk space to back up my stuff on I've been looking around the tutorials, and I'm wondering if a Repair Install would help in this case?

Thanks again for the replies, they're very much appreciated :)

I just ran into this problem on Win 7 Pro 64-bit SP1. I am using Avast Free 2015 with its Enable Hardware-Assisted Virtualization turned OFF.

Going into Safe Mode and then doing the System Restore worked.

As this problem has continued for a long time, and as System Restore is a very important feature in a crisis, MS's failure to fix this after so many years is despicable. An insult to its pay-through-the-nose customers.

Hi, I have had a torrent time sorting this one out. Paid $30 for a program that did absolutely nothing to solve the problem. (Could not get a refund). The solution in the end was so easy!!!. Make sure that you are the owner of both main and back-up drives. Also that you obviously have full control. And here all of the threads I have read stops. You just have to go one further to solve the problem. The 3 steps. Start> (Right-click your drive)> Properties> Security (Make sure your login name is in the list. If not add it.) >Advanced> Owner> (Take ownership of drive with your login name [Normally takes some time]. Now for the part that is normally missing in the threads. Click on the "Effective Permissions" button and search for your login name. Once you have found that just click the top check-box (Full Control) and OK. Whalla........0x80070005 sorted.:)
