    backup questions

I run a backup to an external drive. This is managed by one of the services provided by Norton with its antivirus program and runs all the time. My question is whether this obviates the need for a system image disk. Is this correct? On the other hand I think it might be a good idea to have the repair disk derived from W7. Is this correct?

I would put my primary emphasis on System Image, it works great and has saved many at this forum. Norton in my opinion is not the best AV to be used with Windows 7. It has been indicated in several BSOD reports that I have helped remedy.

That being said many rely on Macrium Reflex, which is excellent backup software.

Hello 2leon, welcome to Seven Forums!

If you are referring to a disk that Norton prompts you to make so you can recover to an image created by that program, yes it is necessary and completely different from the "system recovery disk" created with Windows 7 and they are not interchangeable at all.

bare foot kid: It is not a disk but an external drive that gets updated weekly.

I have at least a dozen times, and I still don't understand, you mention a backup and then start up about a "system image disk" and then a "repair disk" all three totally different things.

Sorry about the confusion. What I am asking it is whether the backup that is collected periodically on an external drive is a good substitute for a system image disk.
The second question looks for confirmation to the notion that no matter what, it is a good idea to have a repair disk.
Hope this clarifies what I am trying to learn. Thanks for your patience and persistence.

I reaffirm my prior answer; in addition I say that it is good to have a repair disc, too.
You never know when it may be needed. One example, why use an image, when a minor repair will suffice?
