Automated Restore Points W7

I was not exactly sure where I should post this, so I hope this is OK ?

I have been having trouble getting my 'system restore' to successfully go back to the required restore point. I have Advanced system care installed which was automatically setting restore points at start up so I tried cancelled the ASC schedule, cleared all restore points in W7 and set up the W7 Task scheduler to run automated restore points at system startup and 12pm daily.

I then restarted the system expecting W7 to automate a restore point when I rebooted but no restore points at all were created. I do understand that W7 is only supposed to automate restore points if none have been created in the last 7 days but I had cleared everything and I rebooted the system just in case on the first reboot, everything had not re-adjusted - but still nothing.

I have therefore had to set a manual restore point and I am just wondering if I should re-set ASC to automate the restore points (which it does daily on start up without problem), or wait to see what W7 does over the next week or 2.

My concern is that perhaps Advanced System Care setting the restore points automatically is interfering with the W7 system - which is maybe why I cannot do a successful system restore ? It's not much good if ASC smoothly sets up a restore point daily, if W7 will not revert to the date selected.

Hi Sean,

This isn't exactly the answer to your problem, but it is also worth bearing in mind that a Restore is allways created prior to Windows installing any update, unless its been turned off.

Have you by any chance turned off System Restore? See image.

No , system restor is not switched off because as you say, a restor point is clearly being created when an update takes place - this is why it's odd - there appears to be a full compliment of restor points but it is very rarely that I can managed to make a successful 'restore'. Today I managed one but it was just to the point where I manually created one this morning, before installing a program. System restore worked this time but has not for the last 12 or so attempts in the recent past.

Thanks will do - I also note that other systems appear to create restore points e.g. Glary Utilities - but they seem peculiar to that application because on Advanced System Care restore points show up on the Windows SR schedule.

Thanks Golden, I've looked at the Tutorials and they are great (very informative and well scripted) however, I am not yet seeing anything which quite 'pinpoints' my issue.
My system seems to have no problem in creating the restore points using Advanced SystemCare ( Automatic daily restore point set-up), when a program or windows update/upgrade is installed. Ample restore points are scheduled. whether Automatically, after a download or by manual creation....no problems there.......

In my opinion there must be some sort of conflict between the Advanced System Care setting up automatic daily system restore points and Windows setting up it's own.

I do understand that if Windows 'Weekly restore point schedule' is preceeded by an intermediary restore point, then the weekly schedule will be interrupted for the next weekly roll.

Having said this, as I mentioned in previous post - once I switched off the Advancesd System Care Application automated daily system restore point, Windows did not seem to be 'picking up the hint' so to speak and start setting it's own Restore Points.

Other applications also set up restore points (e.g. Revo Uninstaller, sets up a restore point prior to uninstalling a requested Application).

Complete Clean also shows Restore Points - but I think that application is just picking up the overall Windows RP Schedule.

The end result is that although I have a bunch of restore points, when I try to restore to something more than say a day old, the System Restore Mechanism runs the full course but at reboot, says it has been unsuccessful.
Luckliy, no major issues have yet occurred which make System Restore absolutely imperative but if that was the case, it looks as if I may be in trouble.

WHat I am going to try again is to switch off all schedules in applications set to produce automatic restore points and follow the Tutorials you suggested to Automate a Windows update.
Although I have already tried this - perhaps I should give it at least 3 weeks to see where it takes me.

p.s. One other anomoly which I noticed on System Properties. In the list of Drives, I show PQSERVICE (which I understand is only applicable to Laptops - mine is a Desktop PC) so I have this switched off - as is the slave Drive-

I only have Drive C switched on for Restore Purposes.

Would this have any bearing on things?
