Back up

I have set up windows 7 to back up to an external drive but it fails to do so. It starts OK and gets to about 20% and that is where it stays for hours, until I give up and stop it. Is this an issue with Windows 7 or am I doing something wrong. I am a novice with computer so suggestions gratefully received. Thanks

What is the size of the Ext HD ? and how much Free space is available ?

The size is 1Tb and has 500Gb free space

Sorry, not sure about Fat32s and NTFS's

type disk management into the start button search box and hit the enter key.

Wait a few seconds.

A windows will pop open and you will see a column that should say NTFS, or FAT 32 next to your external drive's drive letter.
