I'm trying to backup my new computer for the first time... Ive heard of doing it online as opposed to on your computer. I do not have an external hard drive, so this seemed like a viable option instead of taking up a bunch of memory doing it on the computer itself. Does anyone have any information?
There are a few services but all seem to have problems - as far as I have seen. Besides, a system image may take 10 to 40GBs and the line speeds will have a hard time to keep up with that.
I think you are much better off to invest $50 in a 500GB external disk. Imaging the system only makes sense if you do it frequently (at least once per week). And that is much easier with the disk.
It is not the intention to hyjack this thread but if I may, there is this doubt that bother's me for a long time.
I did notice that most of you guys advice on the purchase of external hdd.
I have one 320 GB USB 2.0 Seagate Free Agent Go Ultra Portable Drive.
I must say that I have been using it to store my photographs.
Can I use it for imaging and backup?
If yes, will I have to format and partition it like you do with internal hdd?

Sure you can use that disk. No special arrangements are needed. Just define an imaging folder on the disk and put your images there. It also works without that folder just selecting the drive, but with a folder it is neater.
I suggest you do not use the messy Windows7 imaging. You have no control of what it is doing. Rather use this: Imaging with free Macrium It works perfectly, is easy to use and very reliable.

Suggest you use your external Hard Drive.
Personally I would much prefer to rely on myself rather than an outside source.

I go with the external HD's they are cheap, and most of all private. I have seen far to much data hacked online
