Windows 7: Cannot create restore points

Well, I have fixed the problem, though I still don't know what the root cause was. After several more days of searching, I came across an article for Windows Vista, which said it would apply to 7 as well. It suggested inserting the Operating System disk and choosing to do a live upgrade of the OS while running Windows normally. I did this with a Windows 7 install disk.

It went through the process of "upgrading" the OS and after rebooting, System Restore is working like a charm. I was able to update iTunes and am currently installing SP1 for Windows 7. I didn't have to reinstall any applications or reset any user preferences.

I seem to have lost the link to the site where I found the information, but I'll keep looking for it so I can post it back out here.

Thanks to all who attempted to help me. It was very much appreciated!

Did you ever find that link? I am having the same problem, and want to not have to reinstall all my apps.

Thanks!

I have to apologize. I forgot all about posting it back out here. I can say though, if you insert your original disk after you are booted into the OS, and let it do an upgrade, you won't have to reload any apps.

The trick is to fully boot into the OS first. Then, make sure you are using an OS install disk that is the same as what you are currently running. It should auto-run and ask if you want to upgrade the OS. Let it perform the upgrade. It won't actually upgrade anything but it should repair the system restore capability. Good luck!!

When I insert my Win7 (Upgrade) CD, after fully starting up, I get "Install Windows 7" - the only option. It does not say "upgrade" anywhere. This looks like it will format my drive first - don;t want that. What should I be seeing?

I believe, if you choose that, it should take you to a screen and give you the option to either upgrade or do a fresh install, but I don't know if it is different with the upgrade disk.

I don't see why it would be. You aren't repairing the OS, you're doing an upgrade which would normally save your apps and data anyway.

Cannot create restore point

Download and make a full scan with malwarebytes. What you describe may be a trick of a virus writer to protect his work, since you can help remove a virus with system restore.
I believe I have a virus that is causing my inability to create a restore point. Nothing comes up with the scans. There is also a page that I am unable to access on this computer only. Whatever it is is hidden very well.
