VSS and SPP Error during Imaging

First off, I do have a backup image. I'm using a third party program now for back but is tends to screw with my partition sizing. So would like to resolve this problem.

Through Windows 7, I went to create a image of my system and received a backup failed error.

"A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information. (0x807800A1)"

I've check and made sure that both the Windows Backup and Volume Shadow are started and set to manual within services.

There are errors listed in the event viewer.

Make sure (under services.msc) volume shadows services are set to manual.
If you have a separate system reserved partition it needs to have 50MB free for shadow copy services. You will find the free/used space in Disk Management.

A well regarded 3rd Party imaging software (free and paid version) is Macrium Reflect. It should not mess with your partition sizing. It may leave some unallocated if re-imaging back into a larger partition.

Volume shadow is set to manual and there is plenty of disk space on all partitions to include the system reserve partition that's created during installation.

I don't mind a third party solution but I hate it when something that should work doesn't. The third party software I'm using now, works good but any partition under 1.5GB gets changed to 1.5GB. No big deal if you don't have any that small but with Win7 there is one (System Reserve) and there's a lose on about 1.4GB of disk space.

Given there are good third party options the pragmatic solution is to just use them. Windows imaging works for me (so far) but other experienced members don't use it for various reasons.

You don't mention what you are using with this 1.5GB constraint (weird!).
The two free ones that seem to have most support here are Macrium Reflect and Paragon. If you use WD or Seagate HDDs they both have a free version of Acronis. You will be well served with this selection.

I used Windows backup on my old system but in order to bring the image to my new system I had to use a universal imaging software because of unlike system components. That's what I'm using now. It's called EASEUS Todo Backup. During the image install back on the new system, you allows you to use a slider to adjust the partitions. The smallest I could get the system reserve was 1.5GB.

I"ll look at the ones you listed. I won't be moving between systems for a while since building my Sandy Bridge system. Thanks for the help.
