    OK.
    Lets assume i have my system image on an external hard drive and my current hard drive fails.
    How the hell do i re-install windows 7 and recover my old system on the new hard drive without a boot CD?

    In your situation, I'd assume you would have to boot from the USB stick.

    A good place to start would be to make the HP/Compaq USB Recovery disk.

    Ok discovered that the HP recovery prorgam preinstalled on my PC allows me to create a bootable USB flash Drive. just need a bigger Flash drive....
    Seems like im all set

    Creating a Recovery Disk on a USB Flash Disk

    HP and Compaq PCs with Windows Vista or Windows 7 are configured with a recovery manager that can return the computer to its original operating condition. By default, the Recovery Manager creates a bootable disk on a blank DVD disc in the optical disc drive. HP also provides a USB Recovery Flash Disk Utility to create a bootable disk on a USB Flash Disk Flash Disk also called: flash drive, thumb drive, or jump drive.
