ok. You don't move the whole folder, you move the contents? Why can't you just copy and paste the whole folder. Also, I cannot find in the previous posts on how I find my users folder. But this does sound easy.

I just copied and pasted to the hard drive. Now is there a way to organize it so all the contents of today are under the same date? Like it would show backup dates.

You know if you had backed up on the computer and you wanted to restore it, it gives the dates that you backed up. It just lists the dates.
Backing up the way I just did, I have 5 folders with no dates. If I needed to restore, I wouldn't know which copy of
"excel" to back up? Know what I mean?

One more thing, do you keep this external hard drive plugged in all the time or just when you backup?

Ok firstly, the folders you copied are just that , copies, not backups in the sense that you restore from a back up. so if you have an issue with your computer and the folders get lost .ie tax info. then you have a copy on the external so all is not lost. presumably the folders have a name like photos, tax info etc, just use that as a reference .
and no you dont need to keep the external plugged in all the time just plug it in when you want to access it. i have three externals i use all the time i dont keep my media files on the pc they all get stored in the externals, when i play music the media player is playing the files from one of my externals. if something goes wrong with the pc,as has happened to me previously ,when i replaced the pc then all i had to do was plug in my externals and continue with no loss. well of my media .one of the externals has my documents and photos on it too. and i have a backup copy in my skydrive . so all bases covered. touch wood.

After a while though you are going to have 5 tax folders and 5 of every other folder, you won't know which one is the latest. How do I find my users folder?
I just had a thought. A couple of times I used the restore feature when my computer was acting funny after maybe installing something. So I restored it to a previous time and it worked great. When trying to find this excel file, I tried restoring from the restore point and it wouldn't. I think it gave me an error that I already put a screenshot up on this forum. Do you know how I can get that working again. I never did any backup, but there were a bunch of dates on there. Thanks

system restore doesnt affect your personal files . the dates on that are restore points ,so for instance you can restore the computer to how it was on a particular day ,but it wont affect your data folders.

not sure how you mean five folders if you mean everytime you add files to the tax folder then presumably you copy it to the external also, but if you copy the newer folder and paste it on/in the tax folder in the external then it will say that these files already exist and do you want to replace them. and you would select yes so it always has the most up to date copy in ONE folder.

im sure there must be a simpler way to create a copy and sync it so that when you add to one folder it will add to the backup copy in the external. not sure . perhaps someone else can enlighten us there.

I understand what you mean now. So you will always have the latest into.
Do you know how to get my system restore back to working again? As I said, in this thread I pasted a screenshot of the error. I would like to get that up and running also.
I just took my whole users file, selected all and pasted it. Couldn't be easier or faster.
