Shadow explorer is good but you don't need it. Just use Windows built in previous versions which can be found in the properties dialogue..

True, provided it works and that you want the version last stored. But if you want to go back a couple of weeks, you can get there only with Shadow Explorer. That is why I prefer SE - I see what I am doing.

As with Shadow Explorer you can go back as far as you have valid RPs.

No, you can get there with RPs also, but it takes EVERYTHING "back there" whereas Shadow Explorer does not. It appears that SE allows you to look-into any of your RPs and pick/choose specific files you might wish to recover. I'm going to try it myself, thanks whs.

If you open the Previous Version of a folder you have access to it all in Windows Explorer.

My goodness, I had no idea about that feature of W7, at least not for folders/files! Proving once again "you learn something new every day!" thank you!!!

Is there an easy way to access old Registry entries in Shadow Copies? NM, I found a link to something that I should be able to follow:

Funny you would post about this today--I was having a problem with a program I had to reinstall, and was thinking "I'll BET the registry settings got blown away". Once I found the day-it-last-worked, I used the "Previous Versions" feature of W7 to find the old C:\Users\Max\ntuser.dat hive, copy it out and mount it with Regedit, and use regedit to export its key, then just double-clicked on it and all is well again.

Finding this makes System Restore so much more useful--rather than agonizing over whether to revert to a month-old Restore Point (all all that implies) I could just fix my specific problem using the Previous Versions method.
