You say you've got a copy of Acronis.

It seems a bit strange to go to the effort of getting a copy and then worry whether it's OK. :)

Why don't you try it and see?

Other than that, Macrium always seems to get a good write-up and Windows 7's own backup utility is worth trying out.

It's always best to have more than one backup strategy rather than rely on just one application that may let you down at some time.

Im just really confused about acronis (got it from a giveaway) i just dont get why it wont let me backup on my external hdd, i might one day accidentally delete a partition or two with both backups in there.. Is there any options to create a hidden partition where acronis can store backups?

If you got Acronis as a freebie, it more than likely won't have the functionality that the full, paid-for version does.

Your best is to carry out a Google search on the lines of "Which is the best backup software for Windows 7?" and see what turns up.

I use macrium now after came here. most reliable one I have ever used and so far never let me down. first I use free version to make a image of my system and then after I screwing up couple of times, macrium saved me every time. an I bought pro then and now using for file backup too. I heard that paragon v12 is also very good and feature rich. but never used. and as seavixen32 said, do a google search. because these are mainly for imaging disks.

The two that I use and are reliable is the Windows 7 backup utility and Clonezilla Open-Source Image Backup - Windows 7 Forums

CloneZilla has a bit of a learning curve but it works.
No install, just boot from the CD.

Acronis provide free versions for WD and Seagate drives (separate programs). If you have the wrong drive make then you're likely to have problems.

Many people like Acronis. I personally use Windows built in imaging most of the time and (free) Macrium Reflect as a safeguard plus it has greater flexibility. Neither has ever let me down and I have carried out many system reimages.
