Macrium Reflect creating multiple images, not updating files

My hard drive crashed yesterday, so I tried restoring some of my files on another computer. This is the first time I've tried it, so I never realized it before, but when Macrium backs up my system, it creates about 12 image files instead of just one as I see in all the YouTube "how to" videos. In addition, although I created the backup about a month ago, the newest files it has are from about a year ago. What's the problem? Are my files from the last year really lost forever?

Also, I tried restarting using a bootable CD I made with Macrium, and then restoring from there, but now even the new computer I'm using won't start. It gives me the message beginning "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." What can be done? If I can't get the files back, can I at least make that computer usable again? I have five finals next week...

Couple of things that might work ... but you need a working PC, a CD burner, and some blank CDs ...

Linux has a utility known as Boot-Repair which SOMETIMES can repair Windows boot problems:

[all variants] [Boot-Repair] Graphical tool to repair the PC boot in 1 click! - Ubuntu Forums

Also, if you're willing to pay a bit, you can get an ISO image of a Win7 Repair CD from the following link:

Download Windows 7 System Recovery Discs — The NeoSmart Files

You boot from the second, choose Repair and run it three times.
