It actually just saved me a deleted folder this morning after I emptied my recycle bin. Deleting things when you're extremely tired is never a good idea! :)
The big problem is that MS doesn't believe in it. Previous versions is not in Windows 8 Consumer Preview. It is replaced by File History which is much more limited in the folders in backs up (libraries and a few others) but offers near real time protection (default 1hr) preferably on an external drive.
I don't usually have my external drive connected all the time. I usually just connect it when I backup my files or do a system image. And I don't use the library feature in Windows 7. I have explorer open My Computer instead. So I'm not sure the file history feature would be much use to me.
Haven't tried Windows 8 though as I'm happy enough with 7 at the moment.
Oh and incidentally W8 CP relegates the current backup and Restore to "Legacy Windows 7 Backup" and hides it away only in the Icon view of control Panel. It doesn't replace it with anything that could be called a backup either. I guess that if you have a tablet you don't back it up because drives never fail do they.
Sounds like these forums will be plenty active for sometime after all This sounds like the making of XP/Vista all over again. I'll wait for Windows Number 9.
I think I've been lucky as I've never had a problem with the Windows 7 imaging. Although from reading these forums I see a lot of people have.
They could learn a thing or two from Macrium. Such a great product and great price.....FREE! :)
