I think there was a critical upgrade stage for V5 or later that you should use. I can't remember what it was but I think it would have been before WHS made his ISO.

I'm starting to use Macrium for my imagining needs as Acronis is causing too many problems.

I'm really confused regarding the WAIK 1.7GB download so please correct me if I understood it wrong.

Do I need to download WAIK if I'm running Windows 7 x64 SP1? I'm reading here that it's only needed if running Windows XP.

The rescue iso whs posted is only 170MB after unzipping and the WAIK is 1.7GB. What am I missing here? Is the 1.7GB WAIK needed just to create a 170MB rescue disk?

Is the WAIK useless after creating a Rescue disk or is it required every time to create one?

Is there any reason I should download the 1.7GB WAIK? Instead of using whs's iso and creating my own?

When creating a rescue disk in Macrium Reflect FREE the two Windows choices are, 1) Standard Windows PE and 2) Custom Windows PE. For option 1 when they say "Only available with the full edition of Macrium Reflect" does it mean it's only available for the paid versions (Standard, Pro, Enterprise)?

    1. The WAIK contains much more than is needed for the Macrium WinPE ISO, that is why it is so much smaller.
    2. The paid version of Macrrium has the 170MB ISO built in. They claim they cannot supply it with the free version because of licensing issues with Microsoft.

Reading what SIW2 posted here, does that mean I can use winre.wim file that came with my Win7 SP1 install in C:\Recovery to create a Rescue Disk instead of downloading the 1.7GB WAIK?

You could but you can't build it using the Macrium tools. SIW2 is a bit of a genius with WinPE and has written a tool to do it. I can't find it at the moment but there is a reference to it somewhere on the forum.

As Keith says, just download and burn the WinPE that I have posted. Then you need not worry about any of the rest.

I produced that WinPE the same as you would do when you downloaded the WAIK. But I thought it might be more convenient for you guys to deal with the small WinPE file rather than the massive 1.7GB WAIK of which most is not needed for the production of the WinPE.
