It has nothing to do with the PW recovery process. Also not a problem caused by MACRIUM. Although they read and write a lot of disk blocks. And if the disk controller can't read/write he retries. And if retry count is very large... smart reports an error.

Backup all your data as soon as possible!!! Replace disk with a new one.
I think your drive is dying.
Wow! Thought this thread was pretty much dead!!

Agree with all mentioned by Kaktussoft. Has nothing to do with PW or Macrium. It's the drive itself. SMART is a set of counters that monitors certain aspects of the drive (and is actually built into the drive itself). It attempts to predict imminent failure is not always accurate, but cannot be ignored. Your HD could've been getting worse by the day, and the only way you would know the rate of degradation is by trending the attributes that SMART collects data on. SMART typically doesn't do that on its own, it just has cummulative counters and when one of those counters for a particular attribute hits a trigger point you get your warning.

The point is, when you power up your drive and check its SMART status, it tells you what state it's in at this very moment. In your case you know it's hit a trigger point for at least one of the attributes it monitors. But you don't know how it reached that trigger point. It could've been slowly degrading over the course of a long period of time (meaning you may have considerable access time left), or it could be that the monitored attribute has been degrading at a dramatic rate (meaning you have little to no access time left). That's at least part of why it can't be an accurate predictor of failure.

Without knowing which attribute has been violated I wouldn't even be able to say whether it's better to leave it powered or if it's okay to power it down. But when it is powered the only access to it should be to copy out your data (and if you have the opportunity to grab the most important in big chunks first all the better) -- no more testing/file system checking. And only access it via a bootable USB/CD/DVD. This is where a prior defrag would've helped to reduce excessive head travelling.

I only skimmed through the new posts here, so I'm not positive about your current status, but I hope that helps.

thanks f5ing, I think that explains pretty much why I didn't get any errors before. And I got the point about power on and off. It took long time (~15mins) to turn off the hard drive reading led. Usualy this happens within 2-3min time. And lap feels really slow.

And good to know that bootable cd copying, but Power data doesnt offer it free. And now the note is up and with a great help from SIW, its copying continuesly but little slow. i take all the chunks at once. No problem seems to be there with that.

Now, I have to take this to a friend's home. So, I wont turn off but put it into sleep. Is that a good idea?

As it's probably asleep by now (it was an hour ago that you posted that) I would leave it until you're ready to recover again. Keep power cycles to a minumum.

I would not power it back up until you were completely ready to recover everything you need from it in one single session. Make sure you have everything you need before you do it; adequate free space on external media, cables you may need, etc.

I noticed a mention of Recuva in one of your fairly recent posts. Do you still have lost files on there?

You may not need to purchase any software to get this done. You can try running a mini-version of XP to do it. You'll need to burn to a DVD and boot from it: Download Hiren (scroll down towards the bottom of the page to find the link to d/l version 15.1). I think Recuva is included in that iso.

its almost done guys. Thank you F5ing, I used recuva and power tool data recovery to get damaged data(i think its damaged) as it was unable to copy with normal copy paste.
It goes half way and stuck there. Used power data and little slow, but gets the job done. There wasn't any data lost in D: but few GBs from E: as I have said before. But its fine. i didn't go for deep scans in recuva or power data yet. First I get as much as I can. I will keep power cycles down. Gonna change power plan never to hiber or shut down. Thank you all for the help again. Deeply appreciated.

Have you tried to use a "linux live boot" disk or usb? cuz linux picks up all drive who's partitions has failed, this is usually how i retrieve my data after something like this happens. I rarely use retrieval programs anymore, I have a usb stick with linux on and just boot the pc from it, and there you go, linux is running, and can see all you partitions.

Will this software work if I have no partitions on the drive? i.e. its a single large 2TB volume

    Do you mean diskpart?

Yes, it will "work" on an unpartitioned drive. Normally, you'd use it to make partitions.
