    Cannot access backup and restore

First off, I am a computer illiterate when it comes to anything other than using programs. I was doing research on vodka (of all things) and got hit with one of those security problem malwares. I immediately shut down, but when I restarted, it was still there and when I googled the program, it shut my internet access off. I then did a system restore and now when I went to check my restore point I get the following warning:

"There was an unexpected error in the property page:
The Volume Shadow Copy Service use by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log/ (0x81000202)
Please close the property page and try again."
I cannot access the view log to see what it says. I do not get a trouble message that it is not available, nothing happens.
    HELP!

Hello birdie13 and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think the first thing to try to do is make sure your computer doesn't have any malware on it. You can try to access a special Advanced Boot Options menu and open you computer in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode you could try running a full scan (not a quick scan) with your own installed antivirus suite.

    Advanced Boot Options

If your own antivirus suite won't run you could restart your computer, go to Advanced Boot Options again, and this time select Safe Mode with Networking. Hopefully, you'll be able to go online and download a recommended and free product called Malwarebytes. It has a good track record of finding malware that other products miss.

    Malwarebytes

If your computer is still infected you may have to try another free product from Microsoft called Windows Defender Offline (not to be confused with another Microsoft product called Windows Defender.) WDO would need to be created on a different, non-infected computer.

    Windows Defender Offline

If you could give these a try and post back the results there are some other steps that can be taken to help return your computer to a like new condition.

    marsmimar,
thanks for your response. I ended up doing the second part of your suggestion and it does not seem to have worked. As far as the WDO, if I create it on another computer, how do I get it to mine? CD or DVD?

I still get no response when I try to open Backup and Restore from the Control Pannel, I cannot access the event log and get the following warning:

"MMC cannot open the file C:\Windows\system32\eventvwr.msc.
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file."
Also, I cannot get ActiveX to work to for my Gmail. It shows as enabled, but even when I restore the default and double-check to verify it is enabled, it still does not work.
I'm almost afraid of what other land mines I'm going to come across.
