Hi there
If you don't mind spending a little money on DECENT 3rd party backup software - Acronis will backup from and restore to different hardware -- works quite well.

Activation is another issue but that's not usually a problem if you are using legal software.

I know you've solved your particular issue - but IMO it's always good to have DECENT FUNCTIONING backup and recovery software.

(Most people these days have serveral TB of music / video. Imagine how much time to re-rip / re-create music and video libraries if you lose them or don't have decent backup and your primary HDD fails).
