Don't think you could do a recovery from a 32bit OS to 64bit . I'm going to need some more help from members here .

so this is what i'll attempt:
    - after the windows 7 download finishes (anothrr 5 hrs to go), i'll
    - make a winimage of the current system
    - use the freshly downloaded win7 home premium x64 to do a clean install & use my original prod key
    - IF it works, i'll make a winimage
    - then make a repair disk
    - then try to do the restore i made from the old HD

wish me luck. i feel like chucking this thing out the window
thanks for your help & feel free to make more comments, i'll keep tabs on this forum

You could try to do is boot off the DVD you're downloading and try to do the restore of your image .

    This link will help you

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Read the warning from this link Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

    Comment from the warning :

You cannot restore a 64-bit Windows 7 backup image on a 32-bit system.
You cannot restore a 64-bit Windows 7 backup image with a 32 bit Windows 7 installation DVD or recovery partition, or the other way around.
♦ You must use the same 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 installation DVD or recovery partition as the backup image is.

    Take a look here

    Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool

You could burn the ISO to a DVD or USB flash drive with that tool.

    You're welcome .

Remember you can't restore a 64-bit OS from a 32-bit OS . You have to use the same same bit version no matter if its a repair disk or installation disc.
