XP ate my Win7 restore points with reg workaround

I read the threads here about installing Win7 as dual boot with WinXP. I started in XP by making a new partition and gave it drive letter X:. I applied the reg fix here: System Restore Points - Stop XP Dual Boot Delete

I then installed Win7 and it went well. I was able to login and I also installed a few programs. Today (for the first time after the Win7 install) I logged in to XP. After just a few minutes it started to get really slow, so I tried rebooting into safe mode and removing startup items, no change after I rebooted normally.

I tried to boot to Win7 and I got a message about something wrong and the system would need to be restored. Win7 tried but failed.

I rebooted to XP safe mode and formatted the X: drive, I was able to login to XP and use it just fine after a reboot to normal mode. Once the system was usable I did verify my registry entry. This is what I merged in:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\Offline]
    "\\DosDevices\\X:"=dword:00000001

I'm not sure what to do now if the reg key didn't work.
