    Reinstall Windows 7? Missing restore points


    I've been tinkering with Windows 7 and somehow all my restore points got blown away. About this time I started having problems, especially when iTunes was running. Apps would hang, screen flickers, general sluggishness. Then on reboot, sometimes Windows wouldn't load. Error report said it was probably a problem with system configuration. At this point, I'd like to reinstall Windows without formatting and starting over. Is that possible? I don't really mind starting over from scratch, except for having to copy over all my music and data.

    I've run chkdsk and sfc with no problems identified.

    Still don't know what happened to my restore points. I run ccleaner but its never removed restore points before. I have more than 15 GB hard disk space, so its not a drive space problem.

    Are you dual booting with XP? cos I've read somewhere that XP deletes restore points from Vista and Win 7 in a dual boot environment. I reckon the only way to safely test Win seven is in a virtual machine or if you physically swap the hard drives around when you want to boot into either OS's.

    I only have Win7 installed currently. So, its not another OS deleting the restore points. But thanks for info

    Hi,

    You could try a Repair install.

    It is in fact an upgrade install , where you run setup from within Windows without booting from the dvd.

    It should replace the sytem files without messing up your installed programs and settings.

    This is for Vista , but it's the same idea:
