Need help with HP recovery partition on new hard drive - Systems
If you want 5 partitions, then you will have to create an ONE Extended partition and create Two logical drives within it
Basic and Dynamic Disks (Windows)
See this article from HP explaining which is the best partition to change
How to repartition HDD of HP notebook with pre-installed Win... - HP Support Forum - 742019
I notice the thread marked solved - is it?
You have created a 5th partition D: causing the HDD to become dynamic. This problem has occurred numerous times before. Why HP constrain users this way with their partition structure puzzles me.
The way I would probably proceed is:
1) Backup all data on D:
2) Delete partition D:
3) Convert the drive back to a basic drive using
Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk
I personally would recommend Option One.
4) Recover the unallocated space left by the deleted partition to the right of C: using Disk Management or
Free Partition Wizard
I personally prefer Partition Wizard. This is the tool you need for step 3) using option one. The reason for using an older version of Partition Wizard for step 3) is that the newer version has removed the dynamic to basic conversion.
I would do the above first then consider:
Once you have your system back running properly I recommend you use free Macrium Reflect to make an image of all 4 partitions. If you need a data partition then without deleting any of the HP partitions you need to make C: an extended partition and create a couple of logical drives (C: , D: ) within it. Alternatively you may be to live with deleting the HP Tools partition knowing you can get back to the starting point with the Macrium system images.
The basic vs dynamic is an attribute for the whole disk. The partition delete is a partition operation. The dynamic to basic (see the Brink tutorial that I linked you to) is a whole of disk operation. Maybe read my instructions again and follow the steps in sequence.
Hi i am back with some error..
1. After delet partition operation i have merged unllocated space to C then tried to convert dynamic to basic with Brink tutorial but not work for me.
2. Deleted remaining partition also i.e Hp_Recovery and Hp_ tools to make complet one partition, still it has unable create/convert to basic.. Hmm confused
Partition Wizard
I suggested you do the dynamic to basic conversion before merging the unallocated space.
Your last screen shot does not indicate you have deleted your factory recovery partition. Anyway it was never suggested that you delete your recovery partition.
If you have factory recovery disks, it may be best if you perform a factory recovery as specified by Hp or obtain the disks from Hp.
I am hesitant to point you to a clean install option at this stage.
From an earlier message from the guy, I think he DOES have the Recovery partition backed up..but had lost the Tools partition..I have edited his quote below to try and make it more readable. He was going to try and get a copy of the tools partition from a friends computer. Which judging by the earlier Disk Mngmnt screenshot he may have done.
This is what I don't know....will a Recovery partition from one computer work with another identical model ? Or is it tied to each machine by BIOS ? MAC?
If it is possible to use recovery partition from another identical machine then, that may be the way to go..get wim of both HP_Recovery and HP_Tools from the other machine and start afresh?
From my playing with this I'd say you do not need to clone the 1st small SYSTEM PARTITION, since HP_Recovery re-creates it when Recovery is 'run'. I found this out by accident..I used DISKPART to re create all partitions..I made the first one (SYSTEM) only 100MB instead of the original 300, since only 80mb is used...After running"HP Recovery"..that 1st partition was back at 300mb again. I have suspicions (un-confirmed) that running "HP Recovery" may also re create the HP_Tools partition too.
First i have tried with unallocated size to convert disk" there was no option i have found..
so i have deleted all partition to create primary..!
currently i have image backup of HP_recovery and Hp_Tools and drive C
* HP_TOOLS - partition which allows to use the HP System Diagnostics after pressing the F2 key on the startup -this i read from hp link c section http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-N...p/742019"
I will try to recover my deleted partition back to its original state. Only this i can do
When carried out properly Brink's tutorial has worked for people I've come across with this problem.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see if you can perform a factory restore.
