I assumed the OP wants to do an image recovery, based on this from the original post:

I have also tried going through system recovery and locating it through there to restore the system image but it never is able to locate through any of the options even when doing advanced and typing in the network location

You are right. There is nothing in F.

Although I never use Windows imaging (it sucks), I just made a system image with it and attached it. There must be clearly something in it as you can see from my picture. F is an image of Z. The small difference of free is because of compression in the image.

Kari, I have tried System Image Recovery numerous times and have not had any luck in locating the system image any of the many tries.

Where do I start and what do I need to do to try and repair a system image which would then allow me to recover it in the process Wolfgang referred me to? I am just trying to get back everything I lost when the old HDD on the laptop died which is all on the 180 GB system image.

The external drive has the system image saved on it, I can see it.

I let Kari answer your Q. But as far as I can see, you are empty handed - unless there is another Windows tweak that I am not aware of.

Maybe we should go back to where it shows to be 180GBs (which would be a rather large image).

If the instructions told on posts 2 and 3 and tutorials mentioned in said posts are not working, and your system image file is empty, there's nothing you can do.

You might want to try connecting the old failed HD to an external enclosure to save your docs and files from it.

The system image file on my desktop HDD is 180 GBs and when I copy it to the external it shows up as 180 GBs but for some reason when doing system recovery the laptop can't locate it when going thru the network or when I have the external hooked up.

If desktop where the system image is saved is Windows 7 64 Bit and the laptop is 32 bit, would that have anything to do with it?

The old HD is fried, won't even show up and tried with an enclosure and nothing.
