System restore wont finish, error 0x80070017

Hello all, I'm starting run out of options on what is wrong with my desktop computer.

It has now done it three times, win7 slows down to a crawl, even opening the start menu takes half a minute.

First time I fixed it with reinstalling windows and it worked for a few weeks, then did it again. Then I fixed it by doing a system restore. Now its done it the third time, and system restore won't finish, but gives an error on all restore points. I think it was 0x80070017. It was giving me a similar error on my my previous successful attempt as well but I found one restore point that worked.

Machine is HP desktop, Win7 64bit. Windows runs normally in safe mode.

    Done so far

    - Ran malwarebytes, it found nothing, scan took 13 hours when it usually takes 4
    - Avast found nothing
    - Ran ccleaner, did't fix the issue
    - Uninstalled my printer drivers since it was the only thing installed when the problem started, which took 4 hours to finish
    - Currently running ckdsk, so far it's found multiple damaged files in my desktop folders.

Any idea what could it be? The computer is a year old, could the hard drive be going sour already?

chkdsk stopped because of an unspecified error 6e74667363686b2e b34 at stage 4/5. It says disk space isn't sufficient for fixing the file 13921, named ... and just gives an empty space for the file name

There's at least 100gb of space on the hard drive

Ended with a blue screen saying "driver power state failure". chkdsk started again from the start after reboot. currently running, it hasn't found any damaged files yet.
