change of domin best way to backup

    hi
we were using one domain .now we have migrated to another domain.
in the process i will have to change few client computers domain.
now the issue is that with new domain the same user will have differnt account and i am concerned about the consequence of converting the domain .
my concerns are that will all the applications installed and the customization done to them.

esp each user is using visual studio.virtual box.and some other developement tools. if i swith there domain will they run ? how to carry those settings to another domain ?

also how to save the users data ? does the c:\users folder gets deleted after i change the domain ? i will first bring the pc to workgroup then back to the new domain .. how to ensure with minimum manual intervention that users data is maintained. in some cases the users will have same login name on new domain as is on old one so what will be the effect ? will the same c:\users folder be reused ?

Changing a domain should not do anything to the data on any PC. I will ask a network person to have a look at this.

    Hello,

How many users are there in your domain network? Did you also change the Server (hardware) and the Server O/S?

Do you have roaming profiles/redirection folders or scripts configured? This can get complicated.

Are you running IIS and Exchange Server as well?

Sorry for these questions. Any Programs/Apps won't be affected, User Profiles and GPOs in placed might be affected. Will await for your respond.

It will be a daunting process though, you'll have to use the ADMT.

luckily all our applications resided on the new domain.. further more the GPOs etc are also taken care of at the server end by server team.. so its just a client issue that i have to resolve.. "i.e. moving the clients from old domain to new domain whlie ensuring minmum changes needed after migration to reset the user experience after migration"
also luckily those users who will be migrated has local profiles no roaming profile.s

1: now the issue is that on new domain some users have same login name as on old domain so if i change the domain will windows show the same desktop , application settings (like virtualbox , visual studio etc) for those users ?

2: some users have different login id so can i just unjoin the old domain and join a workgroup and join a new domain and expect that windows will not delete or remove the old domain usrs data stored in c:\users\ ? what about permissions issue ? i have local pc admin rights ..

3: can i just change the domain and copy the old c:\users data into the users directroy created for new login and expect all applicatoins and settings to be saved ?

4: what exactly gets changed when we change the domain with respect to users files/data on local pc ?

To create everything from scratch and use Old Profiles for the new Accounts, you may use the User State Migration Tool (USMT).

Use ADMT to migrate User Accounts, Profiles, computers and servers.

    Hope this helps.
