creating/saving an image to an external HDD?

Now that I've got my new Dell laptop setup with Windows 7 I'd like to back it up. Can I use my external 500GB USB3 HDD to do this?

Hi there .. Sure i would use Macrium though .. It is more reliable than Windows ..

In Backup one can choose to create a System Image and choose "On a hard disk". However, Backup does not see my attached external HD.
