I'm trying to migrate my data drives. I tried Sync Toy, but it took so long that unless I gave up half a day's computer use, the sync was out of date by the time it was done.
Is there any way I can sync drives (echo mode) to include only changes made in the last day or two?
I am not exactly sure if this would be what you want, but here it goes:
- Would you be interested in using FreeFileSync? After you set it up (quite easy), you "compare" the 2 folders/drives whenever you wish to sync and it will search for changed files, then "Synchronize" with a couple of options (depends on how you want the program to react to certain changes).
- I use it to sync my Steam library/Music library and other user files (distributed on 3 partitions/5 drives) to an external 3TB (eSATA).
- For 3 million files it takes about 10 minutes to compare, and sync time depends on how much data have changed.
Edit: It will possibly want to copy everything first time it will sync (but this is a one-time thing).
As far as I know, any so-called "mirroring" or "syncing" application will take some time, the first time it is used. How long depends on the speed of your drives and the number of files to be copied. It's effectively copying just as you would with the mouse by drag and drop. That can take hours if you have hundreds of thousands of files. Maybe 150 to 300 GB per hour is typical, depending on drive speed.
But that's only for the first time the app is run. Thereafter, for the second and later runs, only newly created or modified files would be copied, so the total time required would be much less--typically seconds or minutes--again depending on how many files are involved and drive speed. The app would compare source files to destination files, determine which files on the source do not already exist on the destination, and then copy just those files.
You could just migrate the files via drag and drop, without an application, for that matter.
