Do you see a folder WindowsImageBackup on your ext drive? If so you can try attaching it. This tutorial shows how to extract files from you Windows system image and may be a start to see if you have a good system image.
System Image - Extract Files Using Disk Management

Many people here support Macrium Reflect system imaging. There is a free version that I think is great.

If your image is not recognized then it could be a USB 3 driver issue so try a USB 2 port. The file recovery process in the tutorial just allows you you recover data (including standalone exes) but not installed programs. A factory or clean install would be required.

I'd only copy over existing files if the data files in the image are newer. If you have a good working OS and wish to transfer to a new SSD then I'd make a new image and use (free) Macrium Relect. See how you go with that approach. When you reimage disconnect all your internal drives (just the sata connector) except the new SSD.
