FreeFileSync Halp Please: FFS won't inlock locked files

FFS is working fine. First, here are my discs: C: is an SSD holding the OS only; X: is an internal rotating HDD holding only Documents, Movies, etc. etc. I have two ext. USBs for backups.

When I do a backup from X: to an ext. HDD, just before the Start button I get an error message (first attached image). I check "Don't show this warning again" and press Ignore. The backup completes correctly (I have checked this several times).

As backups are made later, these files accumulate on X: (second image). I can easily delete them by searching X: for "sync.ffs_". They do not appear on the ext. USBs, just X: (and also C: which I tried as an experiment). The offer of ignoring them implies that FFS expects them. So that's my workaround.

-- But why are they there? Does any other user get this? How can I prevent them?

(By the way, there is no contact address for the FreeFileSync.org, and Sourceforge (it's umbrella organisation) refers me to the forum but I get "You do not have permission to post in any forums". Yet the button "Donate with Paypal" works!!!)

-- Does anyone know of a contact?

    Thanks.

Not sure about those errors. Have you tried running the program as Admin?

The dev of FFS is usually pretty good at answering issues. I've had to contact him before. Can't you just register for the forum?

To my knowledge the presence of the lock file would indicate a previous abandoned/failed backup attempt, be it an app hang/cancelled backup or even the computer sleeping during backup process. Something stopping the app from completing successfully ??

That's it! Run as Administrator. It worked. You are a genius! I will mark this as solved in a day or two.

Actually, I am the Admin! But I have found a few other files have given me various trouble in opening, with different reasons, and I now suspect permission problems. I have now run those and they run as well!! My comp. is due for attention soon and I will raise this with my shop. Although all now run properly, it is necessary to run them (as Admin) by clicking on their runnable file actually in Programs or Programs(x86) rather than via a shortcut. However, that is OK for a few weeks.

On you second para, I cannot register because the site FreeFileSync | Free Backup and File Synchronization Software has no contact point and the Sourceforge site offers a forum but it prevents me from accessing it because it doesn't give me permission. Sourceforge simply directs me uselessly to that.

Would it be possible for you please to get in contact with one of them on my behalf, saying that I cannot contact them in any way, asking them to contact me at (address deleted by OP).

That seems the only way to wake them up.

    Thanks.

    Hope you haven't been troubled.

No problem. Often when you get errors of locked files, it can be down to permissions. Even when you're signed on to an Admin account, some tasks/programs occasionally require that you run them as Admin.

    Glad it helped anyway.

    Hi:

Sourceforge site offers a forum but it prevents me from accessing it because it doesn't give me permission.
At most fora, one needs to create an account and register in order to be able to post.
(Very few these days permit public posts without registering.)

Also, you might want to remove your email address from your posts here.
Posting such info in a public forum creates a security risk as the info could be harvested by spammers (or worse).
To avoid getting 100000 new "friends" via email, I would suggest removing it.
    <just a suggestion>

    Cheers,
    MM

You might want to do the same in Reply #5, where you quoted yourself.
