Recovering the documents is easy though. See here:

If I take the hard drive out and put a new one in, can I recover the info from the old hard drive later if I feel that there is something on there that I would need.
Also, if I do replace the hard drive what about my windows OS? I don't have a disk and the only product code I have is from an OEM, not sure if I would need a windows 7 installation disk or can I use the OEM product code to download it from somewhere. I don't think I should have to pay for the install disk if I have already paid for it.

OK so I copied a disk for system repair off the other computer with windows 7 and put it into the old computer. The language screen comes up which brings up the only option is english, which is fine. Than a system recovery options screen comes up and there are two options, 1= "use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting windows. Select an operating system to repair (there is no info in this box), or if your operating system isn't listed, click load drivers and then install drivers for your hard disks.
Or 2=restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier.
I have the Acer recovery disks for my specific computer, which one do I choose and when do I start putting their disks in?

    1. As long as the harddrive functions (e.g. no corruption), you can recover the data.

    2. The OS you can transfer to the new disk with an image. Here is how (just skip the SSD specific stuff):

SSD - Install and Transfer the Operating System

ad 2) they are looking for a system image which you apparently do not have. Sticking the CD in will not help.

Sorry for being ignorant, but am I creating the system image from the broken computer or the one that is working? These directions are a little complicated....

The system image you have to always create for a running system. But in your case that is too late.

I was only referring to point #2 where they want a system image which you do not have and can not produce at this time with a broken system.

PS - you can of course make an image of the broken system but it will not do you any good.
