Win 7 backup/system image failure, chkdsk freezes at stage 4/5...

Hey guys, I just restored my Win 7 to good working order after my hard-wired connection went dead on me. Thanks to the help of this forum, it's running great now so I decided to back up/create a system image again to save me time and energy in the future should something happen to my laptop in the future. The weird thing is that upon trying to do so, I got this error message and both processes failed when just a week ago, both worked fine. I did some research on the error code on the Microsoft forum and a chkdsk was suggested. Upon doing so, it stalls at stage 4/5, specifically at 10%. After waiting 3 hours for progress, I gave up. The first time, I waited 40 minutes, the second time over an hour. I am sure that it wasn't some kind of a glitch now after the 3rd try and 3 hours of patience. Here is the link and the error code I get that prompted me to run the chkdsk.

Unable to create backup files - Error 0X8078002A - Microsoft Community

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.

Thanks, I've read it and will try these suggestions. like I mentioned before, this is strange as I successfully created an image and backed up 7 on this same external Seagate 4tb last week. I just don't get it but I appreciate the help.
