    System restore

Hummm, I was doing some tweeking and decided that I didn't want to keep them so I did a system restore to a couple days ago.

It kept the background that I changed to today and also some of the tweeks such as turning off indexing are still there. Shouldn't system restore have undid anything I did?

No, System Restore only changes changes to the OS. If you want everything back the way it way, use your system image.

I found that system restore will uninstall stuff I have installed previsouly....
    same with updates....

But if I removed anything, like 99% of the time, it was never reinstalled back onto my computer....

What exactly are you refering to, that you changed/want back?

Not sure I want the indexing back on or not shouldn't system restore have put that back to where it was before I changed it?

When you use System Restore, you pick from the available dates. Anything changed after that date will be changed. Things will be the way they were prior to the date selected. If you do not like the outcome, there is an option to cancel the last change.

That's the point, I took it back to a couple days ago before I made any of these changes.

The only thing system restore does is roll back system files, registry keys, and installed programs and change system files. If you customize your Windows 7 computer like change the indexing to on or off, change your background, sounds, colors all of those things will remain the same because you are just changing the features of Windows 7 and not changing any system files at all...

    Hope this Helps..

Yep that helps, so I have to remember what I changed to change it back or do a repair install I guess.

I'm assuming that a system image is the same thing you get when you do a system restore?

Not so. Imaging (also sometimes called "ghosting") is quite different to system restore from system shadows. Here are some explanations: Ghosting approaches - summary because of popular demand How-To Geek Forums
