    Backup Using Reg Save

Hey guys, I am trying to backup a Win 7 Pro 64bit registry using the "Save" command and I keep getting the "Access Denied" on the HKLM and HKU keys. The other HK keys work fine.

Works: reg save HKCU C:\TempFolder\HKCU.hiv /y

    Access Denied:
    reg save HKLM C:\TempFolder\HKLM.hiv /y
    reg save HKU C:\TempFolder\HKU.hiv /y

I have checked all the permissions and have full admin read/write access on all keys, and I sign-in as cmd/administrator.

I have a suspicion that both the HKLM and HKU may have some sort of "in use" or "file open" lock that prevents them from copied. The "Export" command works fine, if I were doing a ".reg" backup, but I want a .hiv extension for the metadata.

Any thoughts or help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bill

Try this program RegBak from Acelogix Software - Downloads

note within the access denied Regkeys folders are hives which are currently in use - thats why you get the message.

    Hey Roy,
Thanks for the conformation on the "access denied Regkeys folders" . I did not know there was such a thing, but it just felt like it. I am writing a batch file for my users and using the internal Task Scheduler for automatic backups. That is why I would have preferred a Command Line option, but will try the RegBak and see if it works. Thanks for the help and suggestion.

If another idea later on is welcomed, I recommend trying Resplendence's Registrar Registry Manager, free version. I think it is powerful enough to backup desired portions of the registry (hives).

    Roland,

Thanks, I did the download and install of the free version. I do know if it saved the registry as in a .hiv format or not. I need to set up a fully automatic reg backup for my users, and I'm old school - I want to see the file name and extension. That's why I tried using the task scheduler and the reg.exe "Save" command line process. It just doesn't "SAVE" the HKLM - bummer.
Anyway, we tried. Thanks for the suggestion.
    Bill :)

    @bsiemsen

Hmmmm .... back in the "old days" you could do this - right?

I don't do that these days, but myself also use Registrar Registry Manager

I think we're going to be stuck with doing such backups manually, on-demand, rather than scheduled automation.
