i put a windows 7 OS hard drive into an enclosure and now want to...

Ok So long story short, my laptop running an updated windows 7 64 bit (updated from windows vista 64 bit) died yesterday morning.

So I had to buy a new laptop but this one is running windows 10 64 bit (HP 15-db0011dx)

When I plugged in the enclosure containing the windows 7 OS hard drive to the new laptop running windows 10, i couldn't open the home folder in the windows 7 to get to the desktop where all the application short cuts were. It asked to give it permanent permission, but it never did work. but after a couple of reboots, it finally gave me access to the home folder today.
S
So I checked if any of the application on the windows 7 hard drive was run-able on windpows 10 off the enclosure

So I double clicked on virtualdub which is an application installed on windows 7 hard drive but not on windows 10, it started up as if it was a new install, but all the old plug in for the application was there.

And when I double clicked on musecore 2 whichis also an application on my wondows 7 but not on windows 10, it worked fine.

But then adobe after effects installed on windows 7 hard drive and was working fine on it, did not load at all from windows 10 off the enclosure.

So I guess my question is how do I set up this enclosure such that I can run the application that were installed on my windows 7 off the enclosure from windows 10 laptop which the enclosure is plugged into via usb?

Is there a name for this process? someone suggested sysprep and I'm very confused.

Any help is most welcome.

You would have to provide the Windows 7 Admin permission to access the Disk.

Generally speaking, you would have to re-install your old programs on the Windows 10 computer, for them to work properly. There are some exceptions to this, and these programs are called portable programs, as they can be run without any prior systems installation.
If you cannot easily re-install your programs on Windows 10, then you could try converting your Windows 7 disk to a virtual disk, and run the virtual disk from within Windows 10.

Hope that helps.

Hello,

No, they are not the same, although both approaches avoid using SysPrep. You can try it your way, if you like. If it works, you would have a disk that can "dual boot" along side your windows 10.

Thanks for all the info.

Will doing it your way allow me to run the application on the windows 7 hard drive without having to install them on my windows 10 laptop?

Also will dual boot slow down my computer at the start up?

A slight delay. During boot up, the computer pauses to display a menu that allows you to select between operating systems. If you press nothing, then the computer will timeout and continue to boot to the default operating system.
