Macrium utilities and tools for imaging: large capacity pen drives

Today I was able to at least look at what Windows 8 would have valuable enough to start to
use it for what an author called alternatives to Nuke And Pave: wipe the disk and reinstall everything. A good one.

But aside from Windows 8 having that new look which I can't stand, the Recover Techniques seem to be inferior: and it requires that the PC be working well enough to execute the repair commands.
After an electric out, the HD is way past that point.

I still have to do the initial steps but I have my hardware back where I can at least
work on the beginnings. I don't have a good thumb drive for it yet either.

In Year Zero of this, as I asked before, what is needed to run Macrium in hardware? Can I image to
a vacant SATA port and spare HD? That will be my question for now. Also on that spare HD should it be nuked and ready to pave?

I have installed an old 320 HD without much used on it. I have a Sandisk FAT32 installed also as
a file holder-- not a Windows setup. So bare FAT32 just about. In Macrium, the illustration shows that if
Image This Disk is selected, the display should show both
NTFS HD and a smaller FAT32 device off to the side. My FAT32 Sandisk is not showing up.
But it registers fine in WIN7 Properties etc. I suppose I should get the exact size of the file content, but
when should the Sandisk show up?

I have revisitited this thread. Probably a difficulty in my setup of the thumb drive.


Still confused about what type of 2 Tb USB drive. Some show a 'flat' style connected to
to a laptop.


Then today I saw a Samsung 2Tb pendrive on deal but with only two available from the vendor looked
dubious.


If I find a regular plug in thumbdrive for my older MSI 880 AMD motherboard is that adequate
to setup Macrium for backup?

I'm still fiddling around with this. I saw some you tubes on shucking Easy Store 2.5 inch HDs from (I think)
USB external cases to use them as regular drives because of some price advantage. But if they are just
standard HDs connected via USB, is there a simple cable or add in board to make a standard SATA HD or

SSD work as USB (reversing the process) for this Macrium setup? In other words, what's in the external USB HD box?

Yes, that can be done with most brands. But not WD because they solder the controller board directly onto the HDD.

Yes, the HDD plugs into a small control circuit board that provides the usb connectivity. You can get adapter cables (ideal for temporary connection) like this....
