Can I restore from Desktop to a Laptop.

I've got a backup from my DT with w7 on it. Can I use this to restore to a LT with w10 on it?

Data yes, as long as you can seperate it from the system itself.

The system is possible using the right software, a few backup and Cloning software packages claim to have the ability to move a system installation from one system to another that has completely different hardware, it is possible that your backup software is one of those that states they can do this.

Have not ever needed to as my data is always kept separate from my system and it's more efficient to simply reinstal a new system and add software as I use it. it's better also as it does not carry over any of the junk that builds up in a used system install.

If you are looking to downgrade to Windows 7 which is no longer supported then you are better off performing a fresh install, and would need an additional licence, which are rare these days and are priced accordingly, Several hundred pounds for a non-reusable OEM disk

Thanks. I'm wanting to transfer all my files from a DT running W7 to a LT running W10. I did a backup using Windows backup on the DT. Can I use it to Restore them onto the LT?

It should work, however I have never had total faith in the reliability of Microsoft backup, especially between versions of operating systems, It should work but it's always a worry.

I would suggest that if still possible you create a backup with something "proven more reliable" than the Microsoft option. Macrium Reflect Free or Aomei Backupper are two that are well reviewed and used by the members here and at Windows 10 Help Forums.

you could make the backup on one of the suggested packages and then try the recovery with Microsoft Backup, knowing you have a fall back option.

Another option is if you connect the two devices to the same router and the same LAN, you could simply copy and past or even drag and drop the data between them, (Windows 7 and 10 use the same basic Networking system (excluding Homegroups and SMB1 )

Make full images of the OS and data partitions onto external media before embarking upon this venture, Sysprep or no sysprep. One can also use Image for Windows (not free), EaseUS Todo (free and fee).
