HDD crash, but healthy, SMART okay, help recover data, chkdsk orphan

I ran chkdsk /X /f on a SD card and it found 139 files. but it couldn't recover them as the SD card was full and there was no space to write them. why was it trying to write the recovered files onto the same drive?
