No restore points and other problems with Windows 7 Toshiba

My good old laptop is causing me strife. I’m encountering one thing after another.

I have tried various way to resolve the problem but it’s proving difficult.

    problem 1.

press power on. Toshiba logo quickly flashes by and then the usual starting Windows appears. (Luckily there is no blue screen) But the logo glows and dims and it just stays and does not go into the welcome screen. So it will do this for 5-10 minutes until screen goes black and hibernates? But power is still on. So again I switch off laptop as it’s a dead end.

Try next option. Which is problem 2.

I try to find another way to get into the laptop. So while the screen is still
on the Windows logo, I hold down the power button for 5 seconds until it shuts down.

press power button on again. Then Windows Error Recovery comes up. I press F8 to stop the counter. I have the choice of either Launch Startup Repair (recommended) or Start Windows Normally. So I choose the Launch Startup Repair.

it says windows is loading files. A few seconds later it loads startup Repair. (When I first did this, it took an hour before it got to the next stage!) but now it’s only takes a few seconds. It states that Windows cannot Repair this computer automatically. I have the option to send information, to not send and to view problems. I did all these things. So when I chose send information it does a search and comes uo
with if u have recently attached a device or camera remove and restart computer. But I don’t have anything on it. It also gives the option to view diagnostic and repair details. Long story short I have a Registry that is corrupt. So how do I sort this out.

I then choose view advanced options for system recovery and support. Then clicked next after choosing language from system recovery options. Click next again. Administrator account details
then click ok. Then there is a list of options for System Recovery being Startup Repair which I did and didn’t help. Chose system Restore. After a quick 2 sec scan a message comes up for the Restore system files and settings saying I have no restore points in my computer. Which I don’t understand as it’s a windows 7 and it suppose to automatically create them? So I try to click on System Protection to try and create a restore point. And the message says the computer is running in a limited diagnostic state. If I use the System Restore in this limited state, I will not be able to undo the restore operation. So I click ok. And nothing. Computer doesn’t do anything further. So I’m at a dead end.

I do not want to go to factory settings as I have alot of memorable information and photos within the laptop.

if anyone could assist me on this, it will be greatly appreciated.

suggest you copy anything you need to somehere safe before attempting any further repairs.

To do that you will need bootable media on a usb

and storage to copy things onto.

It is possible to use the same usb stick if it is big enough.

It is more usual to attach an hd or ssd via usb connection to copy things onto.

You can borrow my boot media 17514x64v30.iso extract the .iso to create bootable usb using something like usb7ice Usb7ice.zip

Thank u for your reply SIW2. I left the computer on during the night. It was on black screen but the cursor/mouse arrow was visible and able to move around. But nothing much else. I did note that the lights were blinking so I know the laptop is doing something in a sense?. But after much waiting and pressing enter to see if any reaction in the laptop and still nothing, I decided to shut it off and start it again.

after powering up the laptop again it the computer loads quickly after the Toshiba logo straight to windows Error Recovery. And not to the Window as previously. Instead it now gives me new options that it didnt show before? It’s now got safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with command prompt. This hasn’t happened before. So should I just choose safe mode?

Also it’s got start windows normally option but I don’t trust it as it hasn’t worked. But rather leaves me on the windows startup screen. So what should I choose?

Also I’m just wondering if I use the USB how will I be able to pick and choose files if the computer doesn’t even allow me to get into desktop or into anything? And if I were to transfer things into the usb would I be risking any problems and passing it on into the usb aswell which could affect another laptop if I were to download the usb into that?

    Thanks reading my looong posts.

    Thanks again though 🙂

If you use my boot media, it loads into ram and has a desktop so you can see what you are doing. It boots independently of the hard disk.
It assigns itself letter X: and you can see it in explorer, but it is not on your hard disk

You should be able to see the hard disk and copy stuff from there onto another hd or onto the usb stick

    Thank u again. 🙂

I’m not a computer expert and can only understand bits and pieces of what u are sudgesting I should do with hard drive and the process of transferring information. And the link u have offered me. But because I don’t know what I’m doing I’m hesitate to add any thing to the laptop via usb.

At the moment I am waiting to see what the laptop will do next as I selected the safe mode option. After doing this a list of files appeared that show repetitive Loaded: \windows\System32\Drivers\ …but it’s stopped (frozen?)and tells me to wait. 20 minutes and counting and I’m still waiting and there is no movement or progress with files list? Should I just leave the laptop for the day and see if anything happens? or just pull the plug and start again.

questions upon questions. Thanks for sharing my headache 😕
