An update to Macrium has been released. Promises a 30% speed boost & GRUB2 support...

    What's new? 5.2.6504:

    USB Rescue Media
The creation of USB rescue media has been significantly improved and now includes support for external USB hard disks
    Backup Performance
Backup performance has been improved by 30% or more.
    GRUB2 Support
Images now include GRUB2 support for Linux systems
Destination Volume name now shown in the backup log.
To assist in the identification of backup disks where multiple disks use the same drive letter the target drive Volume name is now shown in the backup log.
    MS recovery partition
The Windows MS recovery partition is now included when selecting 'Backup Windows' in Windows 8.0/8.1.
    Improved time remaining granularity
When the time remaining for a backup is less than 3 hours the display will now include minutes.
    Bug Fixes:

    SMTP server port saving error
Changes made to the SMTP server port in the Macrium Reflect defaults could fail to be saved. This has been resolved.
Problem when shrinking a restored incremental image
When shrinking a partition during an incremental image restore the restored file system could require 'chkdsk' to correct file system errors. This has been resolved
An error occurred mounting the Windows Image File
A corrupt .zip extraction could cause rescue media creation failure with the message "An error occurred mounting the Windows Image File". This has been resolved

    "What's new? 5.2.6504:"

I like many use the free version and ran the patch but some of the rescue media enhancements may apply to the paid version.

I do my weekly image tonight so I'll probably update first.

Sure, but isn't redeploying only available in the paid version? I'm asking about the free version.
The redeploying of the paid version refers to dissimilar hardware, such as after replacing a MOBO. If you are only changing HDDs in the same machine, the free version should work just fine.
    Agreed.

It has always worked for me, apart from occasional random glitches (e.g. drive letters changing).

Thanks for the "heads up", kado897. :)

I've always been able to successfully image my Linux partition (previously Ubuntu and now Linux Mint, using EXT4).

What benefits does the GRUB2 support provide?

The update went through. The write speed increased but it still took five minutes to make the image. Read speed increased dramatically; verification took only four minutes instead of five. Overall, the image and verification took only nine minutes instead of the usual ten.

Question: is it necessary to update USB recovery media?

They did not say in the paperwork, but I made one anyhow. Better be safe than sorry.

True that. Sadly, that means updating three of them. Oh, well!

Edit: I just did the first one of the three I have to do and there was an update. How critical it was I'm not sure (it something about 8.1) but, as you said, better safe than sorry. I'm going to start the second one in a moment, then I get to dig out my notebook and do that one (and about three months worth of updates).
