Just for your information Wolfgang. Images made with V6 can't be restored with a V5 PE.
Source...Does Windows PE need to be reinstalled and new rescue CDs made? Will the old Rescue CDs still work?
Version 5 rescue media cannot restore images created with v6 so it is essential to create v6 rescue media when you upgrade. Please note that v6 rescue media can restore images from any version of Macrium Reflect.
Thanks Keith. That is good to point out. That is why I specify the exact version number with the uploaded WinPE.
I don't know what ends up on the rescue media USB. I'm guessing it's just WinPE & Macrium. I figured I'd just download & install these. Then I stumbled across something that said you just cannot do that. You first have to make the USB flash drive a bootable drive. One thing leads to another & now I'm looking at all sorts of Macrium's tutorials & knowledge base articles trying to see if there's something else I should be aware of.
I thought I saw a quick start guide or tutorial last night & will have to go back & look. I just thought the whole process would be simpler.
When I made my rescue USBs, I just took some old 4GB USB 2.0 drives I wasn't using and deleted anything that was on them. Then I just used Macrium Reflect to install Win PE. Instead of using Wolfgang's download, I let Macrium Reflect download Win PE. It takes a bit longer but that way I knew it was up to date. All I had to do was follow the prompts from Macrium Reflect. Easy peasy. Also, MR stores that download so I won't have to do it again anytime soon (unless I upgrade to V6; I'm waiting a bit to see how it works out).
See if this Macrium KB article helps:

The thread is
Image your system with free Macrium
It was my understanding that to make your own pe rescue media using the free Macrium you still need to download the WAIK. This is a one time (large) download from MS and is only a problem if you have very slow download speeds (basic ADSL is fine).
Michael, they eased it a little bit. Instead of the full 1.7GB Waik, they now download only a 500+MB portion. But now that is compulsory if you want to install Macrium.
