last backup could not complete on RW/DVD

my last backup attemt was stopped because it said the DVD blank disc could not be formatted properly, do I have to do that before backup? because it said it was doing it during the process.

also I have no recovery disc that came with my recent second hand computer, can I make one? is that backup or is backup only for my personal files and no hard drive data?

The recovery discs will not backup your files. It merely provides a way of repairing the installation in the event the system cannot boot. See link. System Repair Disc - Create

Have you backed up to a DVD before? If so, it could be a bad DVD.

there was a loud beeping sound and shortly after that a popup window saying my scheduled backup was ready to process and to insert DVD/CD disc so I did and a message came up saying that there was a DVD/CD driver error and click OK to attempt to repair and recover bad pathway, so I did and it said error found and repaired continue with backup procedure and formatting and shortly after a 100% backup complete message came up ( even on the partially previously backuped disc ). so now that is good for what, my files only not a recovery disc for rebooting crashed system?

You just made a backup. To restore a full system image, you need to create a Repair Disc. System Repair Disc - Create
